Young people working across New Zealand's primary industries will soon have access to new support designed to strengthen leadership skills and expand industry experience. The Government has announced the Minister of Agriculture Future Leaders Scholarship, a programme that will provide three scholarships each year to emerging leaders in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry.
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Todd McClay said the initiative will help talented individuals gain valuable knowledge and practical experience that can prepare them for leadership roles across the sector. Each successful applicant will receive a $10,000 grant that can be used for study opportunities, industry development activities, and both domestic and international learning experiences.
Focus on Governance Skills and Industry Experience
The scholarship has been created to encourage the next generation of rural leaders to build stronger governance capabilities while gaining broader exposure to different parts of the primary sector. Recipients will have the chance to learn from industry experts, explore new ideas, and develop skills that can support businesses, organisations, and communities connected to farming, forestry, and horticulture.
The Ministry for Primary Industries will work alongside sector representatives to establish the application process and selection criteria. Industry input will help identify areas where leadership and governance skills are most needed, ensuring the programme supports future growth across rural New Zealand.
Government officials say the selection process will be designed to provide equal opportunities for applicants while maintaining transparency throughout the programme.
Investment in the Next Generation of Rural Leadership
Mr McClay said the scholarship reflects confidence in the people who will help guide the future of New Zealand's primary industries. He noted that innovation, practical thinking, and strong leadership continue to play a major role in the sector's success both at home and overseas.
The new programme comes as the Government places greater attention on developing skilled leaders who can respond to future challenges and opportunities across rural industries. By supporting education, industry engagement, and governance experience, the scholarship is expected to help participants build the confidence and expertise needed to take on influential roles in the years ahead.
Applications for the Minister of Agriculture Future Leaders Scholarship will be introduced through an annual process once programme details and eligibility requirements are finalised.
