New Zealand's young farmers are set to receive additional support after the Government announced new funding to strengthen NZ Young Farmers clubs and help grow future rural leaders. Agriculture Minister Todd McClay said the organisation plays an important role in connecting and supporting young people across rural New Zealand, making a positive difference in communities throughout the country. To support that work, the Government is providing $60,000 in funding through one-off grants of $1,000 for each of the 60 NZ Young Farmers clubs nationwide.

Funding Supports Local Volunteer Committees

The grants are aimed at helping the volunteer committees that manage club activities, recruit members, organise events, and secure sponsorship within their communities. These committees form the foundation of local clubs and play a key role in ensuring they remain active and attractive to young people entering the rural sector. The funding is expected to help ease some of the pressures faced by volunteers while allowing clubs to continue delivering opportunities for their members. Mr McClay said strong local clubs are essential for building connections, encouraging participation, and supporting young people living and working in rural areas.

Building Skills and Connections for the Future

NZ Young Farmers has spent decades helping young people develop leadership skills, expand professional networks, and build lasting friendships. Through club events, competitions, and social activities, members gain valuable experience that can support both their personal and professional growth. The organisation has become a well-known part of rural life in New Zealand and is preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year. The latest funding is expected to help clubs organise local centenary events and recognise the organisation's long-standing contribution to rural communities. Mr McClay said NZ Young Farmers continues to play an important role in developing future leaders for the country's agricultural and primary industries.

Additional Support for Rural Wellbeing

Alongside the club grants, NZ Young Farmers is also receiving support through the Government's Rural Wellbeing Fund. The organisation was one of 18 community-based groups selected for funding aimed at improving wellbeing across rural New Zealand. A total of $585,000 has been allocated to NZ Young Farmers to expand programmes focused on physical, mental, and financial wellbeing. The funding will allow the organisation to build on its existing network of 60 clubs and deliver new initiatives that support young people facing the unique challenges of rural life.

Mr McClay said strong rural communities are vital to New Zealand's success, with the primary industries continuing to provide jobs, economic growth, and opportunities across the country. The Government's investment reflects a commitment to supporting the next generation of farmers, growers, and rural leaders while helping ensure rural communities remain connected, resilient, and prepared for the future.
