Ukraine summons Georgian ambassador after reports of Saakashvili's detention
Ukraine's foreign ministry has summoned the Georgian ambassador in Kyiv following a report about the detention of the former president and opposition politician Mikheil Saakashvili in Georgia, the ministry spokesman said on Friday.
Separately a spokesman for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed concern about the arrest and the "tone" of statements coming from Georgia.
Saakashvili, who lived in Ukraine for several years and was granted Ukrainian citizenship, was detained on Friday upon his arrival ahead of local elections. Despite him being sentenced to prison in absentia in Georgia, Saakashvili said he wanted to return to help "save the country" and called for post-election street protests.
