Maldives Recalibrates India Policy Under President Muizzu
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has welcomed the recalibration of the India policy under President Mohammad Muizzu's government. The MDP expressed confidence that India remains a key ally, capable of providing swift assistance during emergencies. The MDP emphasized the importance of maintaining strong Maldives-India relations for the benefit of both nations.
In a significant diplomatic shift, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has applauded the reorientation of Maldives' India policy under President Mohammad Muizzu's administration. Party President Abdulla Shahid emphasized Maldives' trust in India's ability to respond during emergencies, following his meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Jaishankar's visit marked the first high-level interaction between the two nations since Muizzu assumed office last year, a tenure initially characterized by anti-India rhetoric. Shahid criticized the previous stance, attributing economic and diplomatic strains to it, and endorsed the renewed bilateral endeavors, including agreements on civil service training and digital payment systems.
The MDP urged the Muizzu government to issue a public apology for prior derogatory remarks against India and praised current development projects funded by Indian grants, highlighting the reinstated cooperative spirit as a foundation for furthering regional security and mutual prosperity.
