Congress lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, accusing him of neglecting the escalating crisis in Manipur while continuing his travels across India and abroad.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh noted that Manipur has been plagued by violence since May 3, 2023, leading to the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry on June 4, 2023. Ramesh criticized the commission's delay in submitting its report, originally due in six months but now extended to November 24, 2024.
Ramesh's comments followed the Center's decision to extend the commission's deadline to November 20. Ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo communities has claimed over 220 lives and left thousands homeless, with inquiries led by ex-chief justice Ajai Lamba.
