In a noteworthy political development, Gujarat Congress President Shaktisinh Gohil has resigned, taking responsibility for the party's lackluster performance in the recent assembly bypolls. The Congress finished third, far behind the Aam Aadmi Party and BJP candidates who secured victories in Visavadar and Kadi.
Gohil, speaking at a press conference, mentioned that the bypoll results failed to meet Congress's expectations. Gopal Italia of AAP won the Visavadar seat by 17,554 votes, while BJP's Rajendra Chavda triumphed in Kadi, a seat reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, by a margin of 39,452 votes.
With Gohil's departure, senior MLA and Gujarat Congress general secretary Shailesh Parmar will serve as the interim president. Gohil expressed that, had Congress won at least one seat, he might not have resigned from his position as state Congress chief, a role he assumed earlier this year.
