United Opposition Stymies BJP's Delimitation Bid

In a significant political win, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced the opposition's success in thwarting a BJP-led attempt to pass a contentious Constitution amendment bill in the Lok Sabha. The bill, aiming for delimitation, was perceived as undermining democracy by using half the population as a political shield.

The government needed a two-thirds majority, but the bill was defeated when only 298 out of 528 MPs supported it. The opposition, under the banner of INDIA, united to counter the proposal, arguing it endangered the country's democratic fabric by proposing to raise Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850 post-delimitation.

Kharge has called upon the Modi administration to implement the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam', calling for 33% women's reservation in legislatures by 2029. The recent legislation, advocating enhanced female representation, highlights the ongoing political tug-of-war between the government and the opposition.
