In a significant political upset, Trinamool Congress Minister Shashi Panja was defeated by BJP newcomer Purnima Chakraborty in the Shyampukur assembly constituency.
Panja, a three-time MLA and minister under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, garnered 45,615 votes. In contrast, Chakraborty drew 60,248 votes, as per Election Commission statistics.
Panja, a resident of Shyampukur and a medical graduate, has been a key figure in local politics since 2011. He is notably linked to the Trinamool Congress legacy through his marriage to Ajit Panja's son, a former Union Minister.
