In a significant protest on Saturday, demonstrators blocked the National Highway-2 at Namdilong, demanding the swift and unconditional release of six Naga civilians, reportedly abducted by Kuki militants from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district. The protest, spearheaded by the Koubrou Range Liangmei Women's Union, has intensified public scrutiny on the actions of the State and Central governments.
The demonstrators have openly criticized the government for its lackluster response, claiming it has failed to secure the safe return of the hostages. Although 18 people were initially taken, 12 have been released unharmed, leaving six still captive. The ongoing protests reflect growing anxiety among the Naga community, as articulated by resident Chunjaioiu, who voiced concerns about the fate of the captives and the government's handling of the incident.
Authorities, including Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand, have engaged with the victims’ families, yet details about the remaining hostages remain elusive. Protestors have urged the Prime Minister and local authorities to intervene to prevent further escalation. The peaceful demonstrations underscore a desire for resolution and justice, amidst fears that governmental inaction could lead to heightened tensions.
