Tensions Escalate Despite Ceasefire: Lebanon in Turmoil

Despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire taking effect on April 17, Israel has executed nearly 3,500 air strikes on Lebanon, according to Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. The strikes, while largely avoiding Beirut, continue to ravage southern Lebanon amidst ongoing conflict with Hezbollah.

In a statement released by his office, Salam reported 407 controlled demolitions and six widespread demolitions, leaving entire villages in southern Lebanon in ruins. The Israeli military has yet to respond to these claims.

The recent flare-up began when Hezbollah launched rockets against Israel, supporting Iran amidst strikes from both Israel and the U.S. With over a million people displaced by the conflict, Lebanon faces a humanitarian crisis compounded by failed efforts for lasting peace.
