British Defence Minister Quits Amid Military Spending Dispute

British Defence Minister John Healey resigned on Thursday, citing a dispute over military spending as his reason for stepping down. Healey accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of failing to allocate the necessary government resources needed for national defense.

For months, Britain's defence and finance ministries have been engaged in discussions about how to address the growing demands for increased military spending. This has caused delays in finalizing Britain's Defence Investment Plan, which has been pending since last year. In his resignation letter to Starmer, Healey stated, 'You have been unable, and the Treasury has been unwilling, to commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats.'

The delay has angered Britain's defence industry, which argues that it is unable to invest in long-term security programmes amidst ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, especially as the United States begins to shift its focus away from protecting Europe.
