U.S. to Shift Defense Focus: NATO Capacities Affected
The United States is set to reduce its military presence in European NATO operations by cutting aircraft and warship numbers. This move aims to shift the defense responsibility to European allies as part of a broader NATO strategy to enhance self-reliance and balance defense investments among member nations.
The United States plans a major restructuring of its military contributions to NATO operations in Europe, as reported by the New York Times.
Citing senior European officials, the report states that the U.S. will reduce its fleet of F-16 and F-15E fighter jets, cut down on maritime reconnaissance aircraft, and withdraw all aerial refueling tanker jets previously available for Europe.
The decision could impact NATO’s capability to conduct critical long-range missions. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart expressed that this change reflects a shift towards reducing dependence on U.S. forces, as European nations aim to bolster their own defense investments.
