Tiger Translocation Setbacks: Odisha's Efforts to Boost Big Cat Population
Plans to relocate three Royal Bengal Tigers from Madhya Pradesh to Odisha have been delayed due to the erratic behaviour of two tigresses, Zeenat and Jamuna, translocated from Maharashtra. The state is closely monitoring their acclimatization in Similipal Tiger Reserve before proceeding with further translocations.

The Odisha government's plan to introduce additional Royal Bengal Tigers from Madhya Pradesh has hit a snag. This delay owes to the unpredictable behaviour of tigresses Zeenat and Jamuna, previously translocated from Maharashtra to add to Odisha's wildlife diversity.
State forest and environment minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia explained that while the strategy involved moving five big cats from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh into Odisha, only two have arrived at Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) so far. Relocation for the remaining three, intended for Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, is dependent on the successful adaptation of Zeenat and Jamuna to their new habitat.
Odisha officials remain vigilant in their efforts, with conservation as a key focus. They recall similar challenges from 2018 with previous tiger relocations to Satkosia Tiger Reserve. As they assess the current situation, they continue to engage local communities in conservation programs to ensure the well-being of the state's big cat population.
