The Maharashtra government has announced special meetings to tackle the escalating incidents of stray dog attacks in urban settings. This comes after demands for immediate action were raised across party lines in the state legislature.
Minister of State for Urban Development, Madhuri Misal, highlighted the inadequacy of shelters for stray dogs, with Mumbai alone housing an estimated 90,757 dogs and having only eight shelters. Legislators expressed dissatisfaction with the government's efforts, citing safety concerns in their constituencies.
Amid rising pressure, particularly from BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar and others, the government promised to hold a meeting to develop actionable strategies in compliance with the Supreme Court's guidelines.
