In a troubling development, lab reports have verified that the sudden demise of 44 peacocks in Tumakuru district resulted from the H5N1 bird flu virus, as reported by officials on Friday.
The outbreak, which began on April 16, initially raised alarms as peacocks were discovered dead under mysterious conditions across the Kesaramadu, Hirehalli, and Gulur gram panchayats' farm fields. Investigations by forest officials led to the collection and testing of samples at the ICAR–National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal, confirming H5N1 as the culprit.
In response, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Kumar Pushkar announced that the forest department, health sector, and related services have been mobilized to control the infection. Proactive steps have been taken, including the declaration of a 10-km containment zone around the outbreak area, increased surveillance in healthcare facilities, and required protocols enforced for nearby poultry farms.
