In a recent decision, the Maharashtra government has given the nod for diverting 937.077 hectares of reserved forest land in Gadchiroli district for mining activities. The land is earmarked for Lloyds Metals and Energy to expand its scientific exploration and extraction of iron ore.
The proposal, initially submitted in March 2024, has undergone a rigorous approval process, finally receiving the Centre's in-principle consent by May 2025. This development comes under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, with the state submitting compliance by February 2026.
With the Union ministry granting final approval in April 2026, the project is set to proceed, avoiding separate wildlife clearance. The project requires certification from relevant forestry authorities prior to commencement.
