In a significant technological advancement, the Indian government has launched a next-generation e-passport that integrates both paper and electronic components to bolster security and curb fraudulent practices.
Senior Ministry of External Affairs officials confirmed that non-expired legacy passports remain valid until their expiry, while e-passports are being phased in across the country. The upgraded Passport Seva Programme (PSP), including its global counterpart, features AI-powered assistance and a more user-friendly digital ecosystem.
Already, 80 lakh e-passports have been issued domestically, and 62,000 through Indian missions abroad. The chip embedded in these passports securely stores biometric data, ensuring data protection even if the passport is lost or stolen. By implementing these upgrades, India aims to enhance efficiency and transparency in passport services globally.
