The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to choose its new president on January 20, after publishing the internal electoral rolls today. As per an official notification by party's national returning officer and Rajya Sabha MP K Laxman, the electoral rolls will be released at noon, kicking off the candidate enrolment process on January 19.

From 2 PM on January 19, candidates can enroll, and this process will continue for two hours. The nomination papers will be scrutinized between 4 PM and 5 PM, followed by a one-hour window for candidates to withdraw their nominations from 5 PM to 6 PM. The official election or approval, potentially via voting, is set for January 20.

Nitin Nabin, currently the party's working president, is expected to succeed Union Minister JP Nadda, who became party president in January 2020. According to Article 21 of the BJP constitution, an eligible member can serve as president for two consecutive terms of three years each. The presidential election follows Article 19, involving the electoral college comprising National and State Council members, with rules set by the National Executive.

The BJP's national council configuration includes state-elected members, 10 percent of parliament members elected within parliament, and former national and state presidents. Current state council members are elected by district units, legislators, parliamentary members from the state, national council members from the state, and nominated members.

Nitin Nabin's appointment last December as BJP's working president suggests a shift towards youth leadership within the party. As National Working President, Nabin is actively involved in preparing the party for upcoming state elections in Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, West Bengal, and Puducherry.
