Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on being honoured with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) highest award, the ''Agricola Medal''.

In an X post, he said the honour was a tribute to the crores of farmers and every worker associated with the agriculture sector in the country.

''This recognition is a global acknowledgement of Modi ji's unwavering commitment to agricultural reforms, food security, and prioritising farmers' interests in every challenge. Be it the PM-KISAN Samman, unprecedented increase in MSP, promotion of food security, or subsidy on fertiliser procurement, under Modi ji's leadership, India has today become a global leader in the agriculture sector,'' he said in the post.

Shah said India's agriculture model was becoming a role model for the entire world.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Wednesday conferred with the prestigious FAO Agricola Medal by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in recognition of his contribution to food security, sustainable agriculture and rural development.

Modi, who arrived in Italy on Tuesday night on the concluding leg of his five-nation tour, received the award from Dr Qu Dongyu, Director-General of FAO at the UN body's headquarters in Rome.

The FAO Agricola Medal is one of the highest honours awarded by the FAO to distinguished individuals who have played an exceptional role in advancing efforts towards global food security, improved nutrition and agricultural development.
