Commonwealth Leaders Urged to Tackle AI and Misinformation Challenges

At the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) in New Delhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla emphasized the importance of collective action among Commonwealth countries to tackle challenges posed by technological advancements, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). Addressing misinformation, cybercrime, and social division, he advocated for ethical AI and accountable social media to maintain democratic integrity.
Highlighting India's progress in digitalizing parliamentary functions, Birla underscored the transformation of legislatures going paperless. He praised the Commonwealth's potential to unite Presiding Officers in meaningful discourse on technology's impact on democratic systems and the need for policies addressing AI's responsible application and social media's role.
Birla, while welcoming delegates, acknowledged India's legacy in democratic dialogue as the world's largest democracy. He called for the conference to foster cooperation and exchange of best democratic practices. He stressed the need for impartial presiding officers to enhance parliamentary credibility, urging solutions that boost public trust across Commonwealth legislatures.
