Jamia Millia Islamia's Officiating Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Shakeel has announced the immediate suspension of his predecessor, Eqbal Hussain, due to alleged misuse of power concerning a land sale where the university holds pre-emptive rights.
The university has initiated an inquiry into Hussain's actions, which is expected to be overseen by a sitting or retired High Court judge. Pending the inquiry, Hussain is prohibited from visiting the law faculty and estate officer's office.
The varsity's Executive Council found that Hussain exceeded his authority by issuing an unauthorized letter related to a No Objection Certificate for land disposal. As the inquiry unfolds, no immediate response has been given by Hussain regarding the suspension and allegations.
