In a crucial judgment, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has called upon the State Election Commission to ensure that police officials exhibit non-partisan conduct during the December 14 elections. This decision comes amid allegations of electoral interference as uncovered by an audio clip circulating on social media.
The audio allegedly features senior police officials plotting to obstruct opposition candidates from filing nominations, in favor of the ruling AAP party. Reacting promptly, the SEC has been instructed to vet the claims thoroughly, handing over verification tasks to neutral agencies.
With police neutrality under scrutiny, the court emphasized the need for the Commission's unbiased operation throughout the electoral process. The next hearing is set for December 22 as inquiries continue.
