North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held a welcoming ceremony for an army engineering unit that returned after a mission in Russia, as reported by the North's KCNA news agency. During the ceremony, Kim commended the 528th Regiment of Engineers for their "heroic" deeds and allegiance to the Workers' Party of Korea.
The unit was engaged in combat and engineering tasks in Russia's Kursk region amid Moscow's conflict with Ukraine since early August. Reports indicate their crucial role in resisting a Ukrainian offensive and clearing mines. Previously, North Korea sent 14,000 troops to Russia, with over 6,000 reportedly killed, according to allied sources.
The homecoming event took place in Pyongyang, attended by military and party dignitaries. Kim awarded honors to fallen soldiers and hailed the regiment's discipline and unity under difficult conditions. The ceremony underscored North Korea's public recognition of troops fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine.
