Stalemate on the $40 Billion Tech Prosperity Deal
The implementation of a $40 billion U.S.-UK technology agreement is delayed due to U.S. concerns over UK digital regulations and food standards. The Tech Prosperity Deal, covering key technologies like AI, was initially celebrated but now faces hurdles, despite ongoing negotiations and strong bilateral relations.
The implementation of a $40 billion technology agreement between the United States and Britain, known as the 'Tech Prosperity Deal,' has been delayed. The delay stems from concerns in Washington about Britain's approach to digital regulation and food standards, according to officials.
Originally signed during President Donald Trump's visit to Britain, the deal emphasizes collaboration on artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and civil nuclear energy. However, friction over online safety rules, digital services taxes, and food safety restrictions have caused a stall in progress. British Trade Secretary Peter Kyle's recent visit to the U.S. aimed to maintain momentum.
Despite this setback, talks between the two nations continue, with British ministers insisting on maintaining UK standards while negotiating. In the meantime, major U.S. tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI have pledged significant investments in the UK. Negotiations are expected to persist into January, as both countries strive to uphold their partnership.
