Tensions Rise in South China Sea Over Pratas Islands Standoff

Taiwan announced on Saturday that a coordinated maneuver by a Chinese coast guard ship and a survey ship had targeted Taiwan in the waters around the strategically critical Pratas Islands in the South China Sea.

The Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands, located towards the northern part of the South China Sea, have increasingly become a focal point amid China's military activities geared towards asserting sovereignty claims in the region. Security experts highlight the islands' vulnerability to attacks due to their 400 km (250 miles) distance from Taiwan proper, situated between southern Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The operation included a Chinese oceanographic survey vessel, following a coast guard ship's approach to the islands. Taiwan's coast guard described the coordinated actions as unprecedented provocations. However, Beijing has not responded to the claims, and Taiwan countered the operation by dispatching its own vessels, emphasizing Taiwan's exclusive right to the area.
