Opposition Leaders Arrested in Tanzania Amid Anti-Government Protests
Tanzanian police have once again arrested opposition leaders from the CHADEMA party in Dar es Salaam to curb anti-government protests. The detained include Chairman Freeman Mbowe and Deputy Tundu Lissu. Rights activists link these arrests to upcoming local elections in December and a national vote in 2025.
In a move that has raised alarm among rights activists, Tanzanian police arrested opposition leaders from the CHADEMA party on Monday in Dar es Salaam to halt anti-government protests.
CHADEMA's chairman, Freeman Mbowe, was detained on the street, and his deputy, Tundu Lissu, was taken from his home amid plans to demonstrate against the alleged killings and abductions of government critics. Additional party officials, members, and journalists covering the protests were also detained.
These arrests come ahead of local elections in December and a national vote in 2025, raising concerns about the government's crackdown on political dissent. The government has previously stated that it defends democracy and does not tolerate brutality, though it was not immediately available for comment.
