Diplomatic Efforts Continue Amid Ukraine Conflict: Lavrov's Calls with Turkish and Hungarian Officials
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov conducted calls with his Turkish and Hungarian counterparts to discuss the outcomes of a recent US-Russia summit on the Ukraine war. Turkey and Hungary's roles were highlighted as Turkey acted as a potential mediator, while Hungary maintained close ties with Russia.
In the ongoing diplomatic dialogue surrounding the Ukraine conflict, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reached out to both Turkish and Hungarian counterparts on Saturday. This move follows a high-stakes summit between U.S. and Russian leaders that ended without a resolution to the war initiated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.
Lavrov's conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, which was reportedly Turkey's initiative, focused on analyzing the recent Russia-U.S. meeting. Turkey, a NATO member, has continued to navigate its role as a mediator, maintaining communication with both Russia and Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.
Additionally, Lavrov spoke with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, discussing the summit's implications on the Ukrainian crisis. Hungary has drawn criticism for its favorable relations with Russia, having resisted EU sanctions and persisting in energy collaborations. Meanwhile, European leaders reiterate that Ukraine will decide its territorial matters.
