Assam's Electoral Rolls Overhaul: A Fresh Start with Special Revision

The exercise aims to balance thoroughness and efficiency, targeting eligible voters while excluding ineligible ones. It also accommodates residents in transition, amid Assam's unique citizenship provisions.

In a significant move, the Election Commission launched a 'Special Revision' (SR) of Assam's electoral rolls, aiming to streamline the voter list ahead of next year's assembly elections. Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel assured current voters of a seamless process while emphasizing opportunities for new residents to enroll.
The initiative, considered the first of its kind, emerged from Assam's distinctive citizenship regulations. With the National Register of Citizens (NRC) still concluding its publication phase, the SR process replaces the standard Special Intensive Revision (SIR), ensuring all eligible voters are included and ineligible ones are struck off efficiently.
Booth-level officers will conduct home visits for verification, focusing on error-free rolls. New residents, including those displaced by government land encroachments, can easily enroll using prior voter details, while a tech-driven approach will help manage duplication and revisions.
