Chowdry Mohammed Ramzan, the newly elected National Conference Rajya Sabha member, voiced concerns over the limited powers of the elected government in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing that true authority rests with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. His comments came during his inaugural speech in the Rajya Sabha alongside fellow National Conference leaders Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo and Gurwinder Singh Oberoi.
This recent Rajya Sabha election marked a historical moment as the first since the 2019 bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir, filling seats that had been vacant since 2021. Ramzan highlighted the overwhelming mandate given to the National Conference by the public, yet expressed dissatisfaction that the elected government remains largely powerless.
Ramzan's maiden speech drew appreciation from Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who acknowledged Ramzan for promptly reminding the union government about its promise to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Other political figures expressed their support and commitment to the interests of the region's people.
