Polling for the zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections commenced in Punjab at 8 a.m. Sunday, amid comprehensive security measures, officials reported.
The elections are set to fill 347 zones within 22 zila parishads and 2,838 zones of 153 panchayat samitis, with over 9,000 aspirants contesting the elections.
Officials have stated that 1.36 crore voters are eligible, with voting extending till 4 p.m., and results announced on December 17. They reported the establishment of 18,224 polling stations in rural areas, highlighting 860 hyper-sensitive and 3,405 sensitive locations.
Approximately 44,000 police personnel, led by gazetted officers, are deployed to maintain order during the electoral process.
The State Election Commission of Punjab appointed election and police observers, affirming its commitment to conducting transparent and fair elections.
Major political parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and the BJP, are contesting the elections under their respective symbols.
Throughout the campaigning period, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party solicited votes based on government achievements, while opposition parties accused the Mann government of misusing administrative resources to hinder their nominations.
