Ceasefire Strains: Israel's Continued Strikes Amid Tenuous Truce
Despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire declared on April 17, Israel has conducted thousands of air strikes and demolitions across southern Lebanon, as reported by Lebanon's defense minister Michel Menassa. The ongoing conflict with Hezbollah has led to significant displacement, highlighting the fragile state of the Middle East peace efforts.
Despite the start of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire on April 17, Israel has conducted nearly 3,500 air strikes and hundreds of controlled demolitions in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanon's defense minister Michel Menassa. The ceasefire has halted strikes on Beirut but failed to stop clashes with Hezbollah, leaving southern villages devastated.
The Israeli military has not responded to these claims. Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam noted that the conflict between Iran and Israel has exacerbated displacement, impacting over a million people since fighting began on March 2.
The tension, fueled by Hezbollah's rocket fires in support of Iran, has led to retaliatory strikes from Israel and ongoing hostilities. Despite U.S. mediation, efforts for a sustainable ceasefire remain elusive as military engagements continue to challenge peace in the region.
