Tragedy Strikes: Rising Human-Elephant Conflict Claims Another Life

A tragic incident occurred in Chhattisgarh's Korba district on Sunday evening when an 80-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant, as reported by forest officials.
According to Katghora Divisional Forest Officer Kumar Nishant, the woman, identified as Indrakunwar, was working in her field in Golabahra village under Pasan circle when the elephant attacked. Another woman in the vicinity narrowly escaped. Forest personnel were promptly alerted and moved the victim's body for post-mortem examinations.
The victim's family received swift financial relief of Rs 25,000, with a promise of additional compensation totaling Rs 5.75 lakh upon completion of necessary procedures. In light of this incident and two elephants entering the Pasan area Saturday night, villagers have been advised to exercise caution. The human-elephant conflict remains a significant issue in the region, with over 320 people losing their lives in elephant attacks in the past five years.
