Nationwide Flood Management Success: Over 431 Projects Completed
The Indian government has completed 431 flood management projects, securing 5.13 million hectares and protecting 54.84 million people. Under the flood management and border areas programme, states execute these projects with central guidance and funding. The Indian government has achieved a major milestone in flood management, with 431 projects completed nationwide. This ambitious initiative has secured an area of around 5.13 million hectares, safeguarding approximately 54.84 million people from potential flood disasters.
Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Choudhary, informed the Lok Sabha that these projects form part of the flood management programme under the flood management and border areas programme (FMBAP). Choudhary emphasized that while states prioritize and implement projects, the central government aids them with technical guidelines and financial support.
The central government has disbursed a total assistance of Rs 8,725.16 crore to various states until March 2025. A substantial portion of this funding, Rs 862.74 crore, is earmarked for Himachal Pradesh, which has already completed six flood management projects with central assistance. In addition, the National Disaster Management Authority has employed an integrated alerting system for disasters, while the Central Water Commission provides advanced flood forecasts through a network of 350 stations.
