The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) faced a significant turning point as the Union Sports Ministry revoked its suspension, allowing the federation to resume operations. WFI President Sanjay Singh expressed his appreciation towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other key government figures for facilitating this change.
The suspension occurred after Singh announced plans for hosting national wrestling championships in December 2023, raising concerns about governance. In response to the ban's removal, Singh confirmed the launch of wrestling leagues set for November-December, highlighting the benefits these would bring to athletes.
Previously, the WFI witnessed turmoil with several prominent wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, leading protests against the former president Brij Bhushan Singh over allegations of misconduct. Now, with new leadership under Sanjay Singh, the focus shifts to revitalizing the sport and supporting the athletes through expanded opportunities.
