Australia's Online Age Restriction Sparks VPN Boom
Australia's new online age restrictions led to a surge in VPN downloads. Laws now require age verification on adult content and social media platforms, with hefty fines for non-compliance. Major porn sites block Australian IPs. Experts advocate VPN usage for broader privacy benefits.
Australia's decision to implement sweeping online age restrictions has resulted in a significant surge in virtual private network (VPN) downloads. The regulations mandate age verification for accessing adult content and social media platforms, threatening fines of up to A$49.5 million for non-compliance.
In response, major pornography distributors have blocked Australians from accessing their content, while several U.S. states, alongside Britain and France, have enacted similar laws. The Australian eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, emphasized the measures aim to offer children online protections equivalent to those in the physical world.
The increased demand for VPNs highlights public adaptation to the laws, with Tom Sulston of Digital Rights Watch underscoring the broader privacy advantages of VPNs in today's digital landscape.
