In a stark revelation during the Zero Hour in Rajya Sabha, MP Fauzia Khan addressed the alarming issue of farmer suicides in Maharashtra, reporting a staggering 766 deaths over three months. She questioned the government's delayed action in addressing the farmers' plight.
Khan criticized the state for leading in farmer suicides despite announcing a substantial Rs 31,628-crore relief package after devastating rains and floods. She pointed out that a significant number of affected families received no government aid, highlighting a gap between promises and reality.
The discrepancies in the data reported by state and union ministries were alarming, Khan said, noting the massive difference in the reported hectares affected by floods. This inconsistency, she argued, insulted farmers further, urging for more comprehensive measures under the crop insurance framework.
