Swedish prosecutors announced on Wednesday that two men will be tried for setting fire to the Koran in a series of incidents last year. The acts have caused outrage in the Muslim world and heightened fears of jihadist attacks.
The two men reportedly committed offences of agitation against an ethnic or national group on four separate occasions. The burnings were carried out outside a mosque and in other public places, according to the Swedish Prosecution Authority.
Sweden's domestic security service has since raised its terrorism alert level. Neighboring Denmark also experienced similar incidents and responded by tightening legislation to ban the practice. Senior Prosecutor Anna Hankkio stated both men intended to express contempt for Muslims through their actions. Lawyers for the suspects did not respond to requests for comment.
