A suspected member of a notorious criminal gang in Libya is facing a human trafficking trial linked to the discovery of a mass grave of 21 migrants, the Libyan Attorney General's office announced on Friday.
Authorities have gathered evidence pointing to the gang's orchestration of illegal migration in cities like al-Kufra and Ajdabiya. The group's operations reportedly involved detaining and torturing migrants to extort ransoms, with 195 individuals released after enduring such ordeals.
The trial spotlight comes as Libya continues to serve as a critical transit point amid chaos post-2011 Gadhafi's regime collapse. The unstable conditions have made Libya a hotbed for migrant smuggling, exacerbating the humanitarian plight in the region.
