Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been hospitalized in Iran following a serious health decline, involving a cardiac crisis, according to a family-run foundation. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, responsible for awarding her the 2023 prize, expressed deep concern over her worsening condition on Thursday.

Mohammadi, in her 50s, earned the prize while imprisoned for her human rights advocacy in Iran. She was urgently transferred to a hospital in Zanjan after experiencing complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac event, as reported by the Narges Mohammadi Foundation on Friday.

Despite medical recommendations for specialized care in Tehran, prison officials moved Mohammadi to the hospital due to the acute nature of her condition. Earlier in February, she was sentenced to an additional prison term after protesting the death of a fellow human rights lawyer. Calls for her immediate release are intensifying globally.
