Recognizing the detrimental impact of delayed rulings, the Supreme Court has directed all high courts to expedite their judgement processes, requiring decisions to be issued no later than three months after an order has been reserved.
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, with Justice Joymalya Baghchi, stressed the importance of swift rulings in matters of personal liberty. They stated that bail application orders should be pronounced on the same day. If reserved, they must be pronounced and made public by the following day.
The Supreme Court also issued comprehensive guidelines to ensure efficient judicial proceedings, highlighting that orders related to bail or sentence suspension should be immediately communicated to prison authorities, ensuring the release of detainees ideally on the same day or, at the latest, the next day.
