New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have concluded their Annual Leaders' Meeting in Queensland with a renewed commitment to strengthening cooperation across a wide range of shared priorities. The discussions took place against a backdrop of growing economic and geopolitical challenges, with both countries seeking to enhance resilience while advancing common interests across the Indo-Pacific region.

Mr Luxon described the meeting as particularly significant at a time when New Zealand and Australia are responding to fuel supply pressures and navigating an increasingly complex global environment. He said Australia remains New Zealand's most important partner when it comes to prosperity, security and resilience, making close cooperation more valuable than ever. The leaders examined how both governments are managing current challenges at home while also working together in the Pacific and other regions to support stability and economic growth.

Focus on Economic Resilience and Regional Security

A major theme of the meeting was strengthening the trans-Tasman partnership through greater collaboration in trade, investment, defence and regional engagement.

According to Mr Luxon, discussions covered a broad range of issues affecting both countries, from economic resilience to defence cooperation. He noted that the conversations reinforced the value of the long-standing relationship between the two neighbours and highlighted the benefits of working together on shared challenges. At the conclusion of the meeting, the two prime ministers released a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to deeper cooperation and a strong, resilient partnership capable of responding to future opportunities and risks.

The leaders also focused on their shared ambitions for the Indo-Pacific, a region that continues to experience rapid economic growth and increasing strategic importance. Both governments see close coordination as essential to supporting regional stability and prosperity.

During the visit, Mr Luxon and Mr Albanese met with members of the Australia New Zealand Leadership Forum, bringing together business leaders from both countries to discuss economic opportunities and emerging challenges. Participants shared perspectives on operating in an environment shaped by geopolitical uncertainty and explored ways to strengthen integration between the two economies.

Brisbane 2032 Creates New Opportunities for New Zealand Businesses

Mr Luxon's visit also included talks with Queensland Premier David Crisafulli, with discussions focusing on future opportunities linked to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Queensland is preparing for one of the world's largest sporting events, creating significant demand for infrastructure, services, technology and event-related expertise. New Zealand businesses are expected to have opportunities to contribute across a range of sectors as preparations continue.

The Prime Minister said it was valuable to meet with both the Premier and representatives of the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee to discuss how New Zealand companies could participate in projects connected to the Games. The visit highlighted the strong commercial links that already exist between the two countries and the potential for further collaboration in the years ahead.

As the leaders' meeting concluded, both governments signalled their intention to continue building on the close relationship that has long connected New Zealand and Australia. With economic, security and regional issues increasingly intertwined, officials believe stronger cooperation will help both nations respond more effectively to future challenges while creating new opportunities for growth and prosperity.
