The Philippines has escalated its diplomatic challenge by urging China to dismantle a structure on the contested Scarborough Shoal, arguing that it infringes on Philippine sovereignty and violates regional conduct agreements.

The call from the Philippine maritime affairs spokesperson Rogelio Villanueva came amidst rising tensions in the South China Sea, where territorial claims often overlap. Villanueva emphasized that the absence of Philippine consent for the structure's presence on the shoal is a critical issue.

China, however, reiterated its standpoint, with the foreign ministry declaring its 'indisputable sovereignty' over the Scarborough Shoal and defending its activities there as legitimate, including the conduct of scientific research.
