In a move that has sparked controversy, Telangana Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar has dismissed disqualification petitions against two BRS MLAs accused of defecting to the ruling Congress. This comes amid criticism from BRS leaders who view the decision as a mockery of constitutional principles.
Back in December, the Speaker had similarly dismissed petitions against five other BRS legislators. Amid these developments, Kumar issued notices to 10 MLAs confronting disqualification claims. With this latest order, three more petitions remain pending against various legislators.
The Supreme Court, on November 17, issued a contempt notice to the Speaker for not adhering to its instructions concerning the MLAs' disqualification pleas. BRS officials, including Working President KT Rama Rao, have been vocal in condemning the dismissals, attributing them to political pressure from the Congress-led administration.
