The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) declared its list of 21 candidates for the forthcoming Assam assembly elections, marking a strategic shift from a regional to a national political stance. The party aims to attract around 70 lakh voters from the tea tribe community, many of whom have ancestral ties to Jharkhand.
JMM General Secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey stated that the party is keen on contesting 21 assembly seats in Assam. The selection includes candidates such as Priti Rekha Baria for Mazbat and Teharu Gour for Biswanath. Hemant Soren is regarded as a key leader for tribal rights, with his popularity extending beyond Jharkhand.
Ahead of the elections scheduled for April 9, Soren has been actively engaging with Assam's tribal communities. The JMM emphasizes its commitment to becoming the voice for tribals facing socio-economic challenges and is open to forming alliances. Additionally, Soren has requested ST status for Assam's tea tribes, historically classified as OBCs.
