A recent report by the Geological Survey of India has urged for an immediate halt to blasting in the construction of tunnels in Shimla. The recommendation follows a road collapse incident that occurred on November 22-23, attributed to leaking water pipes and construction-related vibrations.
The incident, which saw a portion of a Bhattakuffar road give way, resulted in a school bus accident that prompted local anger and allegations. While locals blamed tunnel work by the National Highway Authority of India for the incident, the authority countered by saying the area was under the jurisdiction of the Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department.
Diverse in their nature, response measures have been implemented post-incident. Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap announced cessation of tunnel blasting, demanded comprehensive surveys, and pursued compensation for residents affected by construction impacts.
