AI Chatbots: The New Confidants of Europe's Youth
A survey reveals nearly one in two European youths use AI chatbots for personal discussions, surpassing healthcare professionals and psychologists in ease of communication. While AI provides constant support, concerns arise over its psychological impact and limitations in detecting human emotions as mental health support tools.
Nearly half of European youths are turning to AI chatbots for discussions surrounding personal and intimate matters, according to a recent Ipsos BVA survey. As mental health concerns rise, AI technologies are increasingly becoming sources of emotional support.
Out of the 3,800 surveyed, over half found discussing mental health issues with chatbots easy. In contrast, ease of communication was lower with healthcare professionals and psychologists. Interestingly, discussing issues with friends and parents was still preferred by many young individuals.
However, psychologists like Ludwig Franke Föyen are urging caution. They highlight the limitations of AI in understanding human emotions and providing safe emotional support, advising that AI should not replace human interaction or professional care in mental health support.
