British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has left the decision regarding Andy Burnham's potential candidacy for parliament to the Labour Party's National Executive Committee. Burnham, considered a leadership contender, faces procedural hurdles due to his status outside parliament since 2017.
The inquiry into Burnham's candidacy arose as Starmer delivered a speech to strengthen his leadership amid growing calls for his resignation from some Labour MPs following recent local election setbacks.
The NEC blocked Burnham from contesting a parliamentary seat in January, citing the high cost of replacing him as Greater Manchester's mayor. Starmer noted any decisions about Burnham's future candidacy remain with the NEC.
