Belgium's rising tennis star, Alexander Blockx, delivered a stunning upset by defeating the defending champion Casper Ruud 6-4 6-4 at the Madrid Open on Thursday, advancing to the Masters 1000 semi-finals for the first time in his career.
Prior to this month, Blockx had never won an ATP Tour-level match on clay. However, he has flourished in Madrid, earlier defeating third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime to secure a spot in the last four.
Wrapping up the match in just 96 minutes, Blockx became the fourth-lowest-ranked player in the tournament's history to reach this stage. With solid serving and aggressive baseline play, the world number 69 showed little sign of nerves. 'I'm proud of how I've played here,' Blockx noted, emphasizing the favorable conditions for his game. Up next, he will face either Alexander Zverev or Flavio Cobolli.
